What types of LED torches are available for the workshop?

When it comes to torches, it’s just like with any other tool: there are different types for different purposes.
Just as a fitter’s hammer differs from a carpenter’s hammer, so too are the lamps used for different purposes. Here we give you an overview of useful hand lamps for the workshop.

Classic torches – the all-rounders for the workshop

Checking, searching and illuminating areas where the ceiling light casts a shadow: the torch is often the first thing you reach for when carrying out general tasks in the workshop.

P5R Work Torch

With its protective elements on the front lens and edges, as well as its chemical resistance, the P5R Work really comes into its own, particularly in highly soiled environments. Thanks to Flex Sealing Technology, it also offers extreme protection against dust and water. The powerful battery can be charged easily and safely via a magnetic charging system – without opening the torch.

  • Luminous flux: up to 480 lumens in Boost mode
  • Beam distance: up to 240 metres
  • Run time: up to 25 hours in the lowest mode
  • Charging time: 120 minutes
  • Waterproof rating: IP68, chemical-resistant housing

Work lamps with wide-angle lighting (hand-held lamps with magnets)

For wide-area lighting of your workbench, a painted car door or the underside of a car viewed from the pit: work lamps with wide-angle lighting are often fitted with a magnetic mount or a swivelling and tilting lamp head.

W7R Work Work Light

The fold-out and swivelling lamp head reaches even into tight working spaces. The characteristic Ledlenser light pattern can be continuously adjusted between neutral white and cool white light. The W7R Work’s powerful, replaceable battery is rechargeable via USB-C. Other useful features include the magnetic surface and the practical transport lock.

  • UV light to detect leaks
  • Luminous flux: up to 600 lumens in Boost mode
  • Run time: up to 5 hours
  • Charging time: 210 minutes
  • Water resistance: IP54

Mini torches or inspection lights

Designed to be particularly slim so they fit into tight spaces: in the engine, in bores and anywhere else where space is limited but you still need to see exactly what’s going on.

What should you look out for when buying an LED torch for the workshop?

  • Luminous flux: Lumen is the unit of measurement for brightness. The more lumens, the brighter the light. For most workshop applications, 150–500 lumens are sufficient. For large-area illumination or outdoor work, you may want to go for a higher output.
  • Power supply: Rechargeable torches are easy to top up – it doesn’t get any cheaper than that. But standard batteries have their uses too: you can swap them out straight away and carry on working.
  • Light pattern: Spotlights provide targeted illumination, for example when looking into a borehole or at a solder joint. A floodlight ensures even illumination – e.g. inside a vehicle or on a workbench.
  • Mounting & attachment: Magnetic base, hook, eyelet or clip.
  • Housing and protection class: Look for robust housing and a high IP rating.
  • Chemical resistance: If your work regularly involves adhesives, solvents, oils, operating fluids and other chemicals.

Chemical-resistant hand lamps for the workshop

No matter how carefully you handle your tools, it’s inevitable that at some point glue, paint or varnish will end up on your workshop lamp. The same applies to oil or petrol when working on engines. Over time, these and other solvents can damage certain plastics. You should therefore ensure the housing is resistant./p>

Tip: The housings of many Ledlenser torches are chemical-resistant. These housings can withstand exposure to chemicals over the long term. Use the search filters to quickly find chemical-resistant LED torches.

Uses for LED workshop torches

Hours of light for metalworkers, mechatronics engineers, DIY enthusiasts and anyone else who spends many hours in the workshop every day: the demands placed on torches are high, because as well as battery life, it is above all the range of applications that matters to you as a tradesperson:

  • Illuminate and inspect workpieces at close range
  • Inspect surfaces such as wooden panels, painted surfaces, sheet metal, plastics, etc.
  • Check screw connections, solder joints, rivets, etc.
  • Examining details such as drill holes, threads or burrs closely
  • Visual inspection of engines, systems and large workpieces

Under the right light, nothing escapes the trained eye. With a hand lamp, you are independent of the fixed ceiling lighting in the workshop. This allows you to inspect workpieces for scratches, unevenness or other defects without having to move the entire – and perhaps heavy – workpiece.

Tip: You can find further lighting solutions such as headlamps, angle lights and LED construction spotlights in our work lights.

Hand-held lamp for the workshop – Frequently asked questions and answers

Swivelling lamp heads, adjustable light beams (spot and floodlight) and mounting options such as magnets or hooks are particularly useful for directing the light precisely and keeping both hands free.
For working under the vehicle, high brightness and mounting options such as magnets or an integrated stand are useful.
As workshops inevitably involve working with dust and liquids, torches should have a minimum protection rating of IP44. For more demanding conditions, Ledlenser offers workshop torches with correspondingly higher protection ratings. Also check for chemical resistance.
Firstly, you should have several light sources installed on the ceilings and walls of your workshop. You can then use a torch to tackle any remaining shadows – or simply shine light on your workpiece from different angles. This allows you to see the grain, fine scratches and other surface imperfections.
