What should you look out for when buying an LED torch for the workshop?
- Luminous flux: Lumen is the unit of measurement for brightness. The more lumens, the brighter the light. For most workshop applications, 150–500 lumens are sufficient. For large-area illumination or outdoor work, you may want to go for a higher output.
- Power supply: Rechargeable torches are easy to top up – it doesn’t get any cheaper than that. But standard batteries have their uses too: you can swap them out straight away and carry on working.
- Light pattern: Spotlights provide targeted illumination, for example when looking into a borehole or at a solder joint. A floodlight ensures even illumination – e.g. inside a vehicle or on a workbench.
- Mounting & attachment: Magnetic base, hook, eyelet or clip.
- Housing and protection class: Look for robust housing and a high IP rating.
- Chemical resistance: If your work regularly involves adhesives, solvents, oils, operating fluids and other chemicals.
Chemical-resistant hand lamps for the workshop
No matter how carefully you handle your tools, it’s inevitable that at some point glue, paint or varnish will end up on your workshop lamp. The same applies to oil or petrol when working on engines. Over time, these and other solvents can damage certain plastics. You should therefore ensure the housing is resistant./p>
