A SECOND CHANCE FOR HUSKIES

In the vastness of Finnish Lapland, not far from Rovaniemi, Betty Maly has found a place where her work makes sense: a life with dogs – and for dogs. What sounds like an adventure to many is everyday life for her. A daily routine that requires patience, expertise and is shaped by a conscious decision: Betty does not work with perfectly trained lead dogs, but with animals that have long been given up elsewhere.

Many of her huskies come from tourism and racing kennels. Dogs that were considered ‘difficult’, that did not fit into the system or no longer had a place in traditional structures. For Betty, such stories do not mark an end point, but a beginning. She becomes a reliable caregiver, creates space for development and recognises what lies behind the animals' insecurities. With calmness, consistency and respect, she builds trust – step by step, at a pace set by the dogs themselves.

A LIFE WITH DOGS

Before striking out on her own, Betty worked in various kennels for many years. Today, she finances her life in the north as a dog trainer, dog physiotherapist and behaviour consultant – a triad that demonstrates how comprehensively she considers animal welfare.

Betty has no foundation behind her, no donation account, no big stage. What she does have are seven dogs, a clear stance and the courage to take responsibility. Her story reminds us that change can begin quietly. That compassion doesn't have to be loud to have an impact. And that someone who gives animals a second chance often makes the world a brighter place where hardly anyone looks.
