What is a construction site lamp used for?
All the lighting on your construction site replaces natural daylight. Many work areas on construction sites would otherwise be too dark or completely unlit. This is particularly true during the early or late hours, during the structural work phase, or in bad weather.
What’s more, during many stages of construction, there is no electricity available yet. A mobile, powerful construction site lamp then becomes essential for any meaningful work. Many trades, such as drywall installers, screed layers and, in particular, electricians, often have to manage without a power supply or can only access it with great difficulty.
For construction sites, this means:
- Between 20–500 lux, depending on the activity (e.g. 50 lux for rough construction work, 200 lux for electrical installation)
- Lighting must not cause glare, but should be shadow-free
- Lighting fixtures must be permanently installed, secured against tipping over, or mobile with a stable base
What types of construction site lights are available?
Construction site lights are now almost exclusively fitted with energy-saving LEDs. Power is supplied via a cable or a rechargeable battery. Many construction site lights are designed for stationary use, whilst some are portable.
Lighting: LED site lamps
- Highly energy-efficient: up to 80% lower power consumption than older light sources such as halogen bulbs
- Generates very little heat: important in enclosed spaces, when in contact with materials, or when touched
- Extremely long-lasting: up to 50,000 operating hours
- Compact design, making them often lighter and more portable
Power supply: Construction site lamps with rechargeable battery or cable connection
Rechargeable construction site lamps
These are ideal whenever it is impractical or unsafe to run a cable, or where there is no mains power supply: on the roof, in the building shell, or when the work area is constantly changing.
Mains-powered construction site lamps
- Suitable for continuous operation or temporary fixed installation.
- Constant light output, no recharging required
- Disadvantage: Risk of tripping over cables, requires a nearby socket
Tip: On many construction sites, a combined solution proves its worth: a battery-powered construction site lamp with the option to continue working at any time using the connected cable whilst charging simultaneously. Here you can find suitable work lights with Dual Power.
Placement: Fixed vs. portable construction site lights
Fixed construction site lights: Construction floodlights
- Usually mounted on a tripod or freestanding with a base
- Well suited for civil engineering, structural work, painting, drywall installation, screeding, etc.
- Adjustable beam angle
Tip: Here you can find construction spotlights.
Portable construction site lamps: work lights, torches, headlamps
- Hand-held lamps with a handle or bracket, often featuring impact-resistant protection
- Headlamps also make the wearer visible
- Ideal for small spaces, electrical installations or working in shafts
- Often fitted with a hook, magnet or eyelet for attaching to scaffolding or ladders
Tip: Here you can find portable rechargeable work lights.
Key features: What should you look out for when buying a construction site lamp?
Key features of a construction site lamp include a high lumen output and brightness, a shock-resistant and robust housing, and protection against dust and water. For battery-powered construction site lamps, a long battery life and easy charging are important.
Brightness: How many lumens should a construction site lamp have?
Luminous flux is measured in lumens. The higher the value, the brighter the light from the lamp.
| Application | Recommended brightness |
| Interim inspections, emergency lighting | from 500 lm |
| Interior finishing, workshop | 1,000–2,000 lm |
| Large-area illumination (e.g. structural work, outdoor areas) | 2,000–10,000 lm |
Tip: Here you can find LED construction spotlights with at least 5,000 lumens.
Durability & Shock Resistance
Dust is almost always present on a construction site, and on outdoor sites, rain or high humidity is always a possibility. Furthermore, materials and tools on a construction site are exposed to operating fluids, oils or mixed building materials. It is therefore important that:
- Impact-resistant housing made of plastic or aluminium
- Rubberised edge protection
- Non-slip base or tripod
- Chemical-resistant materials
Weather resistance & IP protection ratings
Especially on outdoor construction sites, it is important that the lamp can withstand rain, dust and mud. The rule here is: the higher the IP rating, the better the lamp is protected.
| IP rating | Meaning |
| IP44 | Protection against splashing water & foreign objects >1mm |
|
IP54
|
Dust-proof & splash-proof |
| IP65 | Dust-tight & protected against water jets |
| IP67/IP68 | Can be submerged briefly or continuously |
Tip: For long-term protection in harsh construction site conditions, we recommend at least IP54, preferably IP65 or higher. In our Ledlenser Shop, you can use filters to specify exactly what IP protection class the displayed products should have.
