Ready for the Zugspitz Ultra Trail 2026

with light from Ledlenser

The Salomon Zugspitz Ultra Trail powered by Ledlenser (ZUT) is Germany’s largest trail running event and is synonymous with the highest sporting standards in alpine terrain.

We have been an official partner of this unique running event since 2018. Our collaboration is based on a clear shared goal: to provide athletes with the best possible support for their sporting achievements.

Whilst the ZUT represents the ultimate physical and mental challenge around Germany’s highest mountain, we ensure the necessary visibility, orientation and safety during the crucial night-time stages.

Since the end of 2025, the Zugspitz Ultra Trail has been part of the UTMB Trail Series, making it Germany’s first event in the UTMB World Series.

Since 2018, as a partner of the event, we have been supporting athletes with what matters most during the race: visibility, orientation and safety – especially at night.

Why lighting is important on trails

Trail running in alpine terrain places particular demands on your kit. Lighting is not an optional extra, but a safety-critical factor that offers a clear performance advantage. Given the long distances involved in the ZUT, lighting is part of the mandatory kit.

Where are headlamps mandatory on the Zugspitz Ultra Trail?

On the ZUT, high-powered lighting is part of the mandatory kit depending on the distance – for the safety of all participants.

The requirements at a glance:

  • ZUT 100: 2 fully functional headlamps with spare batteries or rechargeable batteries
  • Ultra, Ehrwald Trail and Leutasch Trail: A working head torch with spare batteries or a spare battery pack, or alternatively a spare torch
  • For the shorter distances, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail and the Grainau Trail, carrying a torch is not compulsory or required.

Mandatory equipment for the ZUT

Depending on the distance, a head torch is part of the compulsory equipment for the ZUT:

  • ZUT 100: 2 fully functional headlamps + spare batteries/rechargeable battery
  • Ultra, Ehrwald Trail and Leutasch Trail: 1 functional headlamp + spare batteries/rechargeable battery or 1 spare headlamp
  • Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail and Grainau Trail: no headlamp required

The perfect headlamp for your trails

Are you looking for a reliable headlamp for trail running that lets you maintain your pace even in the dark, thanks to optimal illumination? And one whose battery lasts right to the end without the lamp losing any of its brightness?

Then take a look at our NEO9R headlamp, which is also available in the trail running set with a spare battery. With this, you’ll be perfectly equipped for the medium and long distances of the ZUT (ZUT 100, Ultra, Ehrwald Trail and Leutasch Trail).

For the ZUT 100, we recommend an additional NEO1R alongside the trail running set, so you’re prepared for emergencies in alpine terrain: small, lightweight and with a light pattern tailored for running.

The perfect headlamp

For night-time stretches, you need lighting you can rely on.

Training & Preparation Tips

You’ve secured a place in the ZUT and are in the thick of your training. The excitement builds as the event draws nearer. Now you might be wondering what else you can do?

If you’re registered for a middle or long-distance race, you should specifically incorporate night runs into your training – they’re a crucial factor in your success on race day.

Training in the dark:

Get used to the change in perception and train specifically with a head torch – your body will also adapt to the conditions at night.

Headlamp check:

Check your kit well in advance: does everything work reliably? Does the battery life meet your requirements? If necessary, upgrade your kit early on so you can familiarise yourself with your new headlamp.

Adjusting your gear:

Your headlamp must fit perfectly – even with a headband or hat. It should be comfortable to wear for many hours on the trail. It should also be as light as possible so as not to unnecessarily weigh down your overall setup.

We recommend our Spotlight Story featuring ultra-runner Ida-Sophie Hegemann – for her, night running is a key factor in race success.
