THE UNSUNG HEROES OF TRAIL RUNNING EVENTS

Breathtaking nature, emotional ascents and descents, the battle with physical limits - all this is what makes trail running so appealing. Every year the international trail scene meets at numerous events to compete and prove their own performance.

In 2024, for example, 4,000 participants took part in the Salomon Zugspitz Ultratrail powered by Ledlenser (ZUT) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen - setting a new record for the number of runners at the event. But what many people don't know: It is the people in the background and along the route who make Germany's biggest trail running event possible. Without the commitment of numerous helping hands, the smooth running of the ultratrail would be unthinkable. At the aid stations, they ensure the physical well-being of the athletes - be it by handing out food or drinks. For Max, who is filling a runner's drink bag, working along the route is “also a bit of an adventure”. He is one of many volunteers who make this special event possible.

YEARS OF COMMITMENT MAKE THE ZUT SPECIAL FOR SUPPORTERS

Some of the volunteers have been involved for years. For Laura, the ZUT is “a really great togetherness” every year. She enjoys being part of a large community that works together to give everyone an unforgettable experience. Others have their own reasons for getting involved: “I ran last year myself and then decided to help out this year because the run is so incredibly well organized,” says Tobias, who works with his son Tim to cordon off the route.

Woly, an experienced helper, comes back every year because he loves being close to the trail running community: “When you can actually see how happy people are, sometimes crying, because they've overcome their inner weaker self. I love these moments!” .

COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE BEYOND SPORT

The motivation of the volunteers is diverse, but they all have one thing in common: with their commitment, they create the conditions that enable the participants to achieve their sporting goals. Without them, the legendary run around Germany's highest mountain would not be what it is - a unique adventure and a community experience that goes far beyond sporting achievement.

In the end, it is not only the runners who deserve applause, but above all the heroes behind the scenes who make the ZUT what it is: a highlight of the trail running scene. Find out more about the Zugspitz Ultratrail here: https://www.zugspitz-ultratrail.com/en/
